[NEWS] US Billboard: “Breaking & Entering: The Wonder Girls”

21 11 2009

Complete with a dance studio, rehearsal stage and a recording space, the JYP Entertainment office in midtown Manhattan — the only Asian record label currently open in the U.S., according to founder JY Park — feels more like an artist’s training camp than a corporate space. But for Korean pop band The Wonder Girls, it’s their home — literally.

For the past few months, the quintet — comprised of Sunye, Ye-eun, Sohee, Sunmi and Yubin — has made a home of the top two floors of the building, which is split up into separate dormitories. Chosen through an audition process and placed in the JYP Academy two years ago, the girls have been honing their skills in singing, dancing and acting as well as mastering several languages in preparation of their as-yet-untitled English-language album — a twelve track set with six of the songs being English versions of their Korean hits, and the rest original English material.

[NEWS] Idol Groups May Cause Downfall of ‘Hallyu’

7 11 2009

It may not be an exaggeration to say that today’s Korean pop charts are literally “occupied” by boy bands and girl groups such as the Wonder Girls and TVXQ, whose members are in their late teens and early 20s and dance to computerized hip-hop music.

This trend is making it harder than ever to watch sophisticated performances by middle-aged artists on the small screen particularly during primetime hours.

Lim Jin-mo, one of the country’s most influential music critics, said the unbalanced exposure of singers to the media will undermine K-pop’s international competitiveness and eventually devastate the country’s breeding ground for young musical prodigies.

Nobody – Wonder Girls

If you go onto Billboard’s website right now, you will be able to see Wonder Girls’ “Nobody” ranked at No. 76 on the Hot 100 chart which lists the top 100 singles in the United States, regardless of genre. Last week, the Korean pop quintet became the first Asian artist in 30 years and the first Korean artist ever to place on the chart. It paid off performing in 42 cities over two months as the opening act for the U.S. leg of the Jonas Brothers’ world tour, making efforts to bond with fans for hours before and after each performances and cram studying half a dozen hours of English everyday.
