TY: Hello, all the Music Mania viewers out there. A pleasure to meet you. I’m Sol from Big Bang.
DS: Hi, everyone! I’m D-Lite!
Korea’s phenomenally popular dance-vocal group Big Bang! In 2009, Big Bang’s spectacular major-label debut!
[How You Started in the Music Business]
TY: I’ve been a great music lover since childhood. In 2002, I had a chance to audition for a part in JinuSean’s music video. Playing a part in YGE’s sunbae musicians’ music video led me to have dreams to become a serious musician and join YGE in 2002, where I have trained in vocals and dance.
DS: I’d loved listening to music since I was little. After joining YGE, I started studying hip hop music because that’s the area where it focuses on. I got a lot of help from other sunbae artists in the company.
[First Impressions]
TY: When I first met him, I was extremely surprised. How shall I put it. YGE selects trainees based solely on how good they are musically. So I knew how good he was when he was chosen. And because of his smiley face, I thought he was a very sweet person.
DS: I first met him during one of our dance lessons. When I joined YGE, SOL and GD had already been there training for six years. So when I first saw them dance, it was… Me, I’d never danced before I joined YGE, so… I could see that they were totally on a different level. The company was already considering them professionals.
[How Big Bang Was Created]
TY: The company wanted to form a boy band. Since GD and I were already there, we held an audition to find candidates to join us. D-Lite, TOP and VI were selected through the audition process. There were others too but those three passed the final tests and that’s how five of us got together to form Big Bang.
[Introduce the Members]
TY: G-Dragon is our leader and possesses very unique qualities. He has many talents and writes music for the group in Korea. TOP is a rapper but is doing a lot of different things these days. He’s currently shooting a big budget drama series titled “Iris” in Korea. VI’s specialty was originally dancing but he is now working in movies, TV and other areas of entertainment.
[Major Label Debut Single “My Heaven”]
TY: In our previously released singles and albums, we sang only in English. This was the first time we sang in Japanese. It was both fun and difficult.
DS: The most difficult part was of course pronunciation. There were no particularly difficult phrases to pronounce but I found it a bit hard to pronounce “ts,” “ko” and “to.
TY: One of my parts was “mo ichido sobanikite” and I found “sobanikite” rather difficult. A Japanese staff member who was in charge of directing helped me get through but we had to record that part around ten times to get it right.

[About the Music Video]
TY: You don’t see a lot of me, D-Lite, VI or TOP in the video. G-Dragon played the lead so the rest of us didn’t get a lot of camera time but this music video is different from our previous ones in that it has a Japanese feel to it.
[Gara Gara Go]
TY: This is one of the songs that had never been released anywhere else. It too has some hard to pronounce phrases but is a very upbeat dance tune and we had a great time recording it.
DS: I also had a hard time recording it but we had fun. It’s a great song.
[What Are You a Mania* of?]
*Mania: Aficionado; connoisseur; buff; enthusiast; expert; fan
DS: Since we stay in Japan these days, I’m taking interest in Japan. I hear that there are many great hot springs and ski resorts here. I may not be able to visit all of those places but read a lot about them.
TY: I am totally in love with music and dance. We recently learned the choreography for a new dance routine for our second single and it was loads of fun. We also met some Japanese dancers and they were so good I was really surprised. I really want to learn more from great dancers.
Narrator: Thank you very much both of you.
[Messages for Fans]
DS: We finally debuted in Japan under a major label and our first single, “My Heaven” is out. Keep listening to our first single. Our second single is due out on July 8. I hope you like it too. Keep supporting us – you’ll hear more great music from us.
TY: It’s been a great pleasure talking to you like this. We’ll continue to meet you on many occasions including live performances. Keep supporting us. A special live performance event is scheduled on July 8 to mark the release of our second single, Gara Gara Go. Come see us. See ya!
